Some of us love the falling snow and others dread it. Personally, I love sitting at home by the fire watching the snowflakes fall. What I don’t like is driving in the snow. I think most of us would prefer not to drive in snowy or slippery conditions. That said, it’s important to be as safe as possible when on the road, particularly this time of year.

While many of these tips are common sense, it’s essential to take the time to review them – to stay safe on the roads. Your car is an investment to protect – and you and your loved ones should be protected at all times.

Check out Travelers Winter Driving Safety Tips. Below are just a few of them.
  • Make sure your car is prepared for cold temperatures and wintery conditions like snow and ice. Keep your equipment properly maintained and include a winter survival kit in your vehicle: an ice scraper, snow shovel and sand/salt.
  • Clear snow and ice off your car – including windows, mirrors, lights, reflectors, hood, roof and trunk.
  • Drive with your headlights on, and be sure to keep them clean to improve visibility.
  • Use caution when snow banks limit your view of oncoming traffic.
  • Avoid using cruise control in snowy or icy conditions. In adverse conditions, you want as much control of your car as possible.

What's in your winter survival kit?

If you drive in remote areas or are planning a long trip this winter, keep a winter survival kit in your car. While some of the items may be appropriate for your car all year long, these supplies can help you deal with winter weather.

The atmospheric temperature reaches its extreme limit during the winter and certain regions also receive snowfall during this period of the year. Driving a vehicle on the road surface covered with snow could be very dangerous and one should be very careful while driving a vehicle. Tires with little or no tread depth need to be replaced with suitable substitutes to get better control over the vehicle.

Winter has many adverse effects on vehicles. Roads are covered with snow at this time. So the drivers should drive slowly and they should accelerate slowly on the snowy road to avoid skidding. It is recommended to use snow tires in vehicles as these tires can provide better grip on the snowy road. We should clear snow and ice off our car-including windows, mirror, reflectors etc. We shouldn't use cruise control while driving in snowy or icy conditions.

Undoubtedly, protective measures need to be taken to protect the engine against the extremely cold temperature of the winter. The condition of different components of the vehicle should be inspected prior to leave for a destination to identify and replace weaker components which couldn't stand against the extreme temperature of the winter. I like your point that the vehicle needs to be properly winterized prior to leave for a destination during the winter. The extremely cold temperature has a significant impact on the performance of the vehicle and suitable initiatives need to be taken to keep the engine in working order. Lubricants with higher viscosity should be replaced with fluids with lower viscosity. Apart from this, tires pressure fluctuates accordingly with the environmental temperature. So, tire pressure needs to be inspected regularly and should be properly inflated.

Winter is harsh for vehicles. In regions of heavy snowfall, the roads are covered with snow and ice. So, the drivers face difficulty to drive in the snowy road. Therefore it is suggested to drive slowly on the road and reduce the acceleration and deceleration speeds to avoid the chances of skidding on ice. Moreover it is suggested to use snow tires which can produce better traction on snow covered road . Tires with little or no tread depth should be replaced with suitable substitutes to have a better control over the vehicle.

Couldn't agree more. Cooling system plays important role in the performance of the vehicle by keeping stabilizing the temperature of the engine during the winter. So, the condition of different components of the cooling system needs to be inspected at a regular interval to identify and repair mechanical associated with the cooling system of the vehicle. Apart from this, antifreeze level needs to be inspected at a regular interval and if necessary should be replaced with suitable substitutes to enhance the efficiency of the cooling system.

Tips given in this article is very essential to prevent major accidents during the winter. The fact is that tires couldn't generate better traction on the snow which is solely responsible for such kinds of accidents. Apart from this, low visibility is another important factor responsible for the accidents. So, the condition of the wipers should be inspected prior to the arrival of the winter and impaired wipers should be replaced with a suitable alternative to get better visibility.

The sub-zero temperature of the winter have a significant impact on the performance of the vehicle and hence suitable initiatives should be taken to protect the vehicle against the odds of the extreme cold. The electrical system of the vehicle is highly affected as compared to other components of the vehicle. So, different components of the electrical system of the vehicle should properly be insulated to counter the negative effects of the extremely cold temperature.

Snowfall makes it very difficult to drive a vehicle. So, one should use winter tires in place of ordinary tires to generate better traction on the snowy and slippery surfaces. Besides, the tread depth and tire pressure should be inspected on a daily basis and if the tire has a little or no tread depth then it should be replaced with suitable substitutes. Besides, under-inflated tires should be properly inflated to generate better traction on the slippery road surface as well as to get better fuel economy. To know more about car maintenance, visit
