Stay Safe on the Road This Summer

Are you prepared for the risks associated with summer travel?

More than 34.6 million Americans will hit the road this Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA. Long daylight hours and better driving conditions may lull drivers into a false sense of safety during the summer months. Two in three drivers report feeling safer driving during the summertime because of better road conditions and nicer weather.

Despite drivers’ self-confidence, Memorial Day commences the most dangerous season of the year on the road, with more auto accidents occurring during summer months than any other time of year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Focus on Safety - Hot tips for a safe summer trip
Prevention and planning may take a little time up front, but will spare you from dealing with the consequences of a breakdown – or worse yet, a highway crash.
  • Get your car serviced & check your tires frequently.
  • Protect yourself and your loved ones. Buckle Up. Every Trip.

  • Watch your speed. Take breaks along the way. Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and resist the urge to check your phone (the tweet can wait)!
  • Carry an emergency kit. Jumper cables, flashlights (extra batteries), first aid kit, etc.

Important tips for parents of teen drivers. Take advantage of cheaper GPS prices, and buy one for your teen's car so they won't need to use their smartphones for directions. Or, ensure they've downloaded an app like the free MapQuest app that gives directions verbally and does not require the driver to look at their phone/map. If your teenagers want to head to a summer concert or beach, offer to drive with them before to practice the route. Planning the trip in advance, having directions and knowing your route will ensure that the focus is on driving. Practice builds experience and skills that teen drivers desperately need.
Travelers Insurance has very helpful tips and suggestions for traveling. Check these out prior to taking that trip this summer. You’ll be glad you did.
