Types of Insurance for Small Business Owners

If you're like most business owners, your business card might bear the title CEO or Owner, but you know that on any given day it could just as easily read customer service, marketing manager or chief cook and bottle-washer!

The success of your business depends on your ability to wear all the multiple hats needed to keep the wheels of your business turning. At times, the dizzying pace required can turn even the most capable person into an overwhelmed entrepreneur wearing too many hats.
Protecting the business that you've worked long and hard to grow is a key component to its success. Do you know what types of insurance you should have to protect your specific business? What happens if someone falls on your property? What if an employee sues you? What about a fire or theft in the building?

Business insurance can seems like a crossword puzzle without the clues. At Suburban Brokers, we have the expertise to help you sort out the best options for protecting your business. Look at the types of insurance that might benefit your company.
1. General Liability Insurance: Every business needs to have liability insurance. The policy pays losses arising from real or alleged bodily injury, property damage, or personal injury whether on your business premises or arising from your operations.

2. Property Insurance:  If you own your building or business property, including office equipment, computers, inventory or tools you should consider purchasing a policy that will protect you if you have a fire, vandalism, theft, smoke damage etc.  You may also want to consider business interruption/loss of earning insurance as part of the policy to protect your earnings if the business is unable to operate.

3. Business Owner’s Policy (BOP): This policy packages all required coverage a business owner would need. Often, BOP’s will include business interruption insurance, property insurance, vehicle coverage, liability insurance, and crime insurance. Based on your company’s specific needs, you can alter what is included in a BOP. Typically, a business owner saves money with a BOP because the bundle of services costs less than the total cost of all the individual coverage.
4. Commercial Auto Insurance: Protects a company’s vehicles. You can protect vehicles that carry employees, products or equipment. With commercial auto insurance, you insure your work cars, SUVs, vans and trucks from damage and collisions.  For employees that drive their own cars on company business, you should have non-owned auto liability to protect the company in case the employee does not have insurance or has inadequate coverage.  Many times, the non-owned vehicle can be added to the BOP policy.

5. Worker’s Compensation: Provides insurance to employees who are injured on the job. This type of insurance provides wage replacement and medical benefits to those who are injured while working. In exchange for these benefits, the employee gives up his rights to sue his employer for the incident. As a business owner, it is very important to have worker’s compensation insurance because it protects yourself and your company from legal complications. State laws will vary, but all require you to have workers compensation if you have W2 employees.  Penalties for non-compliance can be very stiff.
6. Professional Liability Insurance: This type of insurance is also known as “Errors and Omissions Insurance.” The policy provides defense and damages for failure to render or improper rendering of professional services.  Your general liability policy does not provide this protection, so it is important to understand the difference.   Professional liability insurance is applicable for any professional firm including lawyers, accountants, consultants, notaries, real estate agents, insurance agents, hair salons, technology providers, and many more.

7. Data Breach:  If the business stores sensitive or non-public information about employees or clients on their computers, servers or in paper files they are responsible for protecting that information.  If a breach occurs either electronically or from a paper file, a data breach policy will provide protection against the loss.
We have the markets and insurance solutions for your small business needs. Let us wear one of your hats for a while and help you to protect your business.

Dangers of Distracted Driving – Part 2

12/29/2017

smh
Distracted driving is dangerous and claimed 3,477 lives in 2015. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) leads the national effort to save lives by preventing this dangerous behavior. Get the facts, get involved and help us keep America’s roads safe.

Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.

You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. Any non-driving activity you engage in is a potential distraction and can increase your risk of crashing.

Consequences
In 2015, 391,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers and during daylight hours, approximately 660,000 drivers were using cell phones while driving. That creates enormous potential for deaths and injuries on U.S. roads. Teens were the largest age group reported as distracted at the time of fatal crashes.

NHTSA is Dedicated to Eliminating Risky Behaviors for a Safer Road
NHTSA leads the fight nationally against distracted driving by educating Americans about its dangers and partnering with the States and local police to enforce laws against distracted driving that help keep people safe.
NHTSA’s campaigns and public service announcements make the case to Americans that safe driving means driving without distractions.
Get Involved: Help Stop Distracted Driving
Teens are the best messengers to their peers, so encourage them to speak up when they see a friend driving while distracted.

Parents first must lead by example, and never drive distracted, as well as have a talk with their young driver about distractions and all of the responsibilities that come with driving.

Educators and Employers – spread the word at your school or workplace about the dangers of distracted driving.

Make Your Voice Heard – be a voice in your community by supporting local laws and speaking out.

More accidents equate to higher costs for insurance companies, and insurers pass along these costs to consumers. The Boston Globe reports that insurers plan on increasing auto premiums 3% to 6% on Massachusetts drivers this year, on top of increases of 6% to 9% in 2016. Insurers in North Carolina, meanwhile, have requested auto premium hikes averaging 13.8%, according to the Charlotte Observer. Drivers in neighboring South Carolina saw their auto insurance rates increase an average of 8.9% last year.

And it’s not just teenage drivers. State Farm says 36 percent of all drivers’ text and drive – and it’s making everyone’s costs go up.

In my mind, that means it’s up to everyone to get involved. As a parent, as an educator, as an employer, and as a citizen. We all need to make our voice be heard.

Visit the NHTSA website for more resources and to learn how you can get more involved.

Happy New Year and safe travels to everyone from all of us at Suburban Brokers!

Dangers of Distracted Driving - Part 1

It's not just cell phones and texting!

It may be surprising to learn that cell phones and texting are only part of the problem when it comes to distracted driving.

Distracted driving is any activity that could divert your attention away from the main task - driving. It is both dangerous and disturbingly common. In fact, drivers spend more than half of their time focused on things other than driving.
While stowing your phone before you drive is an important safety step, other behaviors behind the wheel -- from drinking coffee to using a navigation system -- may also be putting you at risk.
“The fact is, everything that occupies your mind or your vision can contribute to distraction behind the wheel,” explains Chris Hayes, Safety Professional from Travelers. “While many distracted driving studies focus on cell phones, any type of multi-tasking activity and driving simply do not mix.”
Driving distractions may include:
  • Dialing or using a smartphone
  • Texting
  • Eating or drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading
  • Programming a GPS or navigation system
  • Adjusting the radio or music.

Picture
Your brain is only capable of processing a certain amount of information at any given time.

When we attempt to perform multiple tasks at the same time, like driving while talking on the phone or eating, we can encounter performance problems. Multiple tasks compete for our brain's attention.

It may sound like an assumed fact, but you must look where you are going when driving. Regardless, we see people driving without looking where they are going every day. Driving while visually distracted can be just as dangerous as driving with your eyes closed. You would not make a turn or change lanes with your eyes closed, yet, distracted drivers are essentially doing just that.

A distraction can keep you from driving safely in multiple ways. Any distraction, regardless of how quick or harmless it may seem, should be avoided when you are behind the wheel. Remember to keep your eyes and brain focused on the road always.

Avoiding sending text messages or calling someone who is driving can help prevent them from becoming distracted. Parents can set a good example for children by modeling attentive driving, including putting away the phone and not eating or grooming behind the wheel. Learn more about talking to your teen driver.
Drive Safe. Drive Present. Every Second Matters.

Protect What's Important

Are you really protected?
Umbrella insurance isn’t just for the rich and famous. Whether it’s a serious at-fault auto accident or an incident on your property, you can quickly find yourself responsible for damages that exceed the limits on your auto, homeowners, renters or boat policy. And an expensive judgment is the last thing you want to worry about. A Travelers Umbrella policy can help protect your assets and provide additional insurance protection.

Will your primary insurance policies be enough?

Auto, homeowners and other property insurance liability limits may not be adequate to cover a large court judgment. It is easy to find yourself without enough coverage – even if you have high liability limits on your auto or property policy.

Enjoy peace of mind.

To make it easy for you to get the right level of coverage for your specific needs, Travelers offers limits ranging from $1 million to $10 million for customers meeting eligibility criteria. And, when you require legal defense for a covered claim, the policy helps cover defense costs such as attorney’s fees and other expenses.

Travelers Umbrella Insurance Can Provide:
  • An extra $1 million to $10 million of liability coverage, which can help protect assets such as your home, car and boat.
  • Coverage for claims like libel, slander, defamation of character and invasion of privacy.
  • It also helps cover defense costs, attorney fees and other charges associated with lawsuits.
  • This coverage also extends to international occurrences.

In today’s world, anyone can get hit with a lawsuit. That's why it's more important than ever to consider an added layer of protection for your assets – and your peace of mind.

All the things you’ve worked so hard to earn should be protected. Call me to find out what is at risk and how an umbrella policy can protect you.  Call 201-796-1881.

How umbrella Insurance Works

8/10/2017

Picture
It's reassuring to have insurance on our homes, our health and other parts of our lives. But, sometimes our primary insurance policies leave gaps in coverage, and limits on payments.

An umbrella liability policy covers a much higher limit, and goes above and beyond claims directly relating to your home and auto.

The main purpose of your umbrella policy is to protect your assets from an unforeseen event, such as a tragic accident in which you are held responsible for damages or bodily injuries.
It is not just about what is in your bank account. Lawsuits can claim more in damages, putting your retirement savings and your home at risk. A settlement may even garnish your wages.

In these cases, umbrella insurance can cover amounts above the limits of your current homeowner and auto policies. It can also cover rental units you may own, and cover you in case of false arrest, libel, or slander.
Watch this short video from Travelers to better understand umbrella insurance.
Might you need a Commercial Umbrella Insurance Policy? Significant assets can be at risk when businesses are the target of lawsuits, if the cost of a claim exceeds the limits of a business’s underlying primary insurance policies. Commercial Umbrella Insurance extends liability coverage for an additional layer of insurance to further protect business assets.
The Bright Side: Umbrella coverage is inexpensive. With rates for around $17 per month*, a Travelers Umbrella policy is valuable protection. That is a low price to pay to ensure that your assets and future are protected, and for the peace of mind that comes with it. *Download the Travelers Policy overview below.

Bon voyage: keys to staying safe on vacation

The Dog Days of Summer Have Arrived!

What exactly does that mean? The phrase doesn’t stem from lazy dogs lying around on hot and humid days. Instead, we need to look to the summer sky. The ancient Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer “diēs caniculārēs” or “dog days.” They associated the hottest days with the star Sirius. Sirius was known as the “Dog Star” because it was the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major – and also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. For the ancient Romans, the dog days of summer occurred from about July 24 to August 24. Today, The Old Farmer’s Almanac lists the traditional timing of the dog days of summer as being July 3 – August 11.

Many Americans plan their vacations during this time. It’s important to be extra cautious and keep yourself and your belongings secure while vacationing.

  • Be Street Smart. Try and dress down and blend in with your surroundings. Wear inexpensive jewelry while touring or shopping. Don’t flash your cell phone or camera in public.
  • Practice Airport Safety. Spend as little time as possible in the public areas. The gate area is more secure because everyone has already passed through security at that point.
  • Know Hotel Room Security. When using an in-room safe, always recognize that you use it at your own risk. If something is particularly valuable, it’s better to use the hotel’s safe deposit boxes.
  • Carefully Travel Around Town. The #1 risk for most travelers is street crime. Criminals go where the money is, and the highest crime areas tend to be the resort and financial districts. Be particularly cautious when approached by strangers asking for directions or the time. Use money belts and neck pouches to protect money, passports and credit cards. Trust your instincts. Stay on streets that are well traveled, and don’t ignore suspicious persons or activities.
If you are taking to the road for your vacation, be sure to check out our May blog for staying safe on the road.

Don't Be Blown Away By Your Hurricane Deductible

6/27/2017

Picture
Hurricane season lasts from June 1st through November 30th. Do you understand how hurricane damage affects your homeowners insurance? Almost five years after Superstorm Sandy, one third of homeowners in several coastal states are still unaware of hurricane deductibles and how they work, according to The Insurance Research Council (IRC).

Homeowners in New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Texas were asked whether they were familiar with hurricane deductibles, which is a higher deductible found in homeowners insurance policies that applies when a hurricane occurs.
“The findings from this survey suggest that ample room exists for educating homeowners about a key feature of every homeowners insurance policy—deductibles,” said Elizabeth Sprinkel, senior vice president of the IRC. “The need is especially acute as the 2017 hurricane season gets underway, and insurers hope to minimize post-event misunderstandings with their policyholders regarding deductibles.”

Understanding the details of the hurricane deductible will help avoid financial surprises should your home be damaged by a hurricane.
6 questions to review with your insurance agent to keep better informed:
  • Which states have hurricane or windstorm insurance deductibles?
  • Why were these deductibles introduced?
  • When does the hurricane insurance deductible apply?
  • How are hurricane and windstorm deductibles different from regular deductibles?
  • When would I pay one of these deductibles?
  • How do I calculate my hurricane insurance deductible?
Insurance companies instituted special hurricane and windstorm insurance deductibles after an elevated level of storms coupled with increasing coastal populations resulted in massive numbers of storm-related property insurance claims, and heavy financial losses for insurance companies.

Homeowners in high-risk hurricane areas should review their insurance policies so they know how much they may have to pay toward their hurricane storm insurance deductible in the event of a storm.

Call us at Suburban Brokers and we’ll be more than happy to discuss your policy with you, or quote you a policy if you don’t already have one with us.

Be safe this summer.

Stay Safe on the Road This Summer

Are you prepared for the risks associated with summer travel?

More than 34.6 million Americans will hit the road this Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA. Long daylight hours and better driving conditions may lull drivers into a false sense of safety during the summer months. Two in three drivers report feeling safer driving during the summertime because of better road conditions and nicer weather.

Despite drivers’ self-confidence, Memorial Day commences the most dangerous season of the year on the road, with more auto accidents occurring during summer months than any other time of year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Focus on Safety - Hot tips for a safe summer trip
Prevention and planning may take a little time up front, but will spare you from dealing with the consequences of a breakdown – or worse yet, a highway crash.
  • Get your car serviced & check your tires frequently.
  • Protect yourself and your loved ones. Buckle Up. Every Trip.
    Every Time
    .
  • Watch your speed. Take breaks along the way. Keep your eyes on the road, hands on the wheel, and resist the urge to check your phone (the tweet can wait)!
  • Carry an emergency kit. Jumper cables, flashlights (extra batteries), first aid kit, etc.

Important tips for parents of teen drivers. Take advantage of cheaper GPS prices, and buy one for your teen's car so they won't need to use their smartphones for directions. Or, ensure they've downloaded an app like the free MapQuest app that gives directions verbally and does not require the driver to look at their phone/map. If your teenagers want to head to a summer concert or beach, offer to drive with them before to practice the route. Planning the trip in advance, having directions and knowing your route will ensure that the focus is on driving. Practice builds experience and skills that teen drivers desperately need.
Travelers Insurance has very helpful tips and suggestions for traveling. Check these out prior to taking that trip this summer. You’ll be glad you did.
  • How to pack a car safely
  • What to do if your car breaks down
  • What to do if you are in a car accident

Renter's Insurance – 5 Questions to ask

Adulting Is Hard. Insurancing Is Easy.

Adulting is hard
Life certainly comes with its share of routine responsibilities – like grocery shopping. But some responsibilities, such as insuring your electronics, furniture and clothes, are simple. Renter’s insurance can protect your stuff from some of life’s unexpected curveballs for less than you might imagine.

So, while “adulting is hard, insurancing is easy.”

Five Questions to Ask Your Insurance Rep About Renter’s Insurance

Insurance discussion
While renter’s insurance offers broad protection for tenants, it's important for you to choose the policy that best suits your individual needs.

A renter’s policy can cover your personal belongings and help cover legal costs in the event you are sued for accidental bodily injury or property damage of others. But not all policies are the same.

Here are five questions to ask your insurance representative to help you make the right choice.
  1. What's covered and what's not?
  2. Will a renter’s policy cover my roommate?
  3. What's the difference between cash value and replacement coverage?
  4. Will owning a dog affect my renter’s coverage?
  5. Am I covered if my laptop computer is stolen from my car parked outside my home?

You also may want to consider buying all your insurance policies from one carrier. For example, when you bundle your auto and renter’s policies from Travelers, you receive additional savings.

Your place isn’t always ready for guests. But is it secure? Just because you always remember to lock your doors doesn’t mean your place is totally secure. You never know when life’s casualties can damage your valuables, or worse, cause them to disappear completely. Luckily, insuring your stuff is a lot easier than cleaning up after yourself.

Four Things Every Renter Needs to Know About Renters Insurance

Picture
Buying renters insurance to protect your stuff may seem like an unnecessary expense, until you experience a theft or fire in your rented home or apartment and lose some of your most treasured possessions forever.

As you consider whether to buy renters insurance, here are four things you need to know:
1. Renters insurance provides off-premises coverage.
2. You can be compensated if you're forced to relocate.
3. A home inventory can determine how much coverage you need.
4. You can reduce your renters insurance costs.

Why You need renter's insurance

3/26/2017

Adulting is hard. insurancing is easy.

Picture
Most millennials know that “Adulting is Hard.” From laundry to cooking dinner, paying rent or even staying home on a Friday night. What about insurance? According to a study by Princeton Survey Research Associates International for InsuranceQuotes.com, 2016, 66% of 18- 29-year-olds rent their homes and nearly 70% of them don’t have renter’s insurance. So, while “Adulting is hard. Insurancing is easy.”
For the next few weeks, I’ll be posting about renter’s insurance. We’ll examine “Why you need a Renter’s Policy, 4 things you need to consider and 5 questions to ask your insurance rep about Renter’s Insurance.”

Why you need a renter's insurance policy

Picture
Many renters don't realize how they could benefit from having an insurance policy that can protect their valuables in a life-changing event such as a fire or theft. If you assume that damage to your property in your rental home will be covered by your landlord's insurance policy, you are making a mistake. Owners of rental properties typically purchase only enough insurance to repair or replace their structures and cover their liability. Insuring your personal property is up to you.

If you suffer a loss to your personal property or become the victim of a theft or fire, your landlord may be sympathetic. But he or she may bear no responsibility for replacing your property.

Renters insurance offers the same general personal property coverage as homeowner’s insurance. It helps protect you against losses from such mishaps as theft, fire, lightning, vandalism, windstorms and water damage from broken water pipes.  Read more…

How Much Will Your Renter’s Policy Cost?
Considering the broad protection, renter’s insurance policies are relatively inexpensive. In 2014, the average annual premium in the U.S. was $190. The cost is low because renters don't need to buy insurance to protect their homes, only their contents.

At Suburban Brokers, we make insurance easy. You’ve worked hard for what you have. Let us help you protect your personal property.

What do you mean I'm not covered?

Are you thinking of becoming an Uber driver? You should know that “uber” means “over” in English. So if you have an accident, you could be “over” your head in trouble. That’s because many companies won’t cover you unless you take out extra commercial insurance. And some don’t offer Uber coverage in New Jersey. It’s the same situation with other ride-sharing services like Lyft and Sidecar.

Imagine this horror story: You’re on your way to pick up an Uber passenger when a truck rear-ends you at a red light. No one is hurt, but your car has to be towed. Cops arrive and take down everyone’s info, including that you’re an Uber driver.

You submit an insurance claim but it’s denied because you were using your car commercially. Uber is no help because you didn’t pick up your passenger yet. So you’re on the hook for the towing and the car repairs. To add insult to injury, your insurance company drops you—using your car as a business is against the terms of your policy.

New regulations for transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft would require driver background checks, bump up insurance coverage, among other protections.

An estimated 20,000 New Jerseyans have worked or are working part or full-time as TNC drivers, according to the bill’s sponsors. The services have also helped riders and the economy: In December, Lyft released a study showing that in 2016 Lyft saved its New Jersey riders one million hours of travel time, which is valued at over $18 million, and generated more than $19.3 million in extra spending across the state.

Call your insurance company to learn their rules—and their rates--before you take your first Uber drive. If you have concerns about what they say, call us. We’ll be glad to help.

Time to review your insurance coverage

Happy New Year!

The New Year is a good time to reflect on all the important priorities in our lives and to evaluate and set new priorities. For most of us, those priorities include protecting our families, our homes and our businesses. It can help you know that your home and belongings are fully protected and it provides an opportunity for us to address any gaps in coverage that we find.

Before your review, consider putting together a home inventory. This is hands-down the best method for determining if you have sufficient coverage for the contents of your home. You can prepare it on your own, or we can suggest tools to help you.

Look at your policies and check your coverage and policy limits. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is the policy limit for my structure, personal property, and loss of use?
  • If my home burned to the ground would I have enough money to replace my home and its belongings?
  • What coverage do I have for water damage?
  • Are my contents covered on a replacement cost basis?
  • Check your deductibles on your homeowner’s and your automobile policies. Can you afford the deductible in the event of a loss?
  • Are your valuables adequately protected? Do you need separate coverage for jewelry or that piece of art in your living room? What kind of coverage do you have for antiques and firearms?
  • Have you made any additions or improvements to your home that may increase its value?
  • Review your liability limits on your automobile and homeowners polices. Are your assets adequately protected?
  • Are you eligible for any additional discounts or savings opportunities, such as home security discounts, multi-policy discounts, safe driver discounts, good student discounts and the like.

Don’t wait until that flood is in your basement. At Suburban, we can determine ways in which you can save money while assuring that you are adequately protected.  Call us at 201-796-1881.

Wishing you and your family a great and prosperous year!

Winter Driving Safety Tips

12/6/2016

Some of us love the falling snow and others dread it. Personally, I love sitting at home by the fire watching the snowflakes fall. What I don’t like is driving in the snow. I think most of us would prefer not to drive in snowy or slippery conditions. That said, it’s important to be as safe as possible when on the road, particularly this time of year.

While many of these tips are common sense, it’s essential to take the time to review them – to stay safe on the roads. Your car is an investment to protect – and you and your loved ones should be protected at all times.

Check out Travelers Winter Driving Safety Tips. Below are just a few of them.
  • Make sure your car is prepared for cold temperatures and wintery conditions like snow and ice. Keep your equipment properly maintained and include a winter survival kit in your vehicle: an ice scraper, snow shovel and sand/salt.
  • Clear snow and ice off your car – including windows, mirrors, lights, reflectors, hood, roof and trunk.
  • Drive with your headlights on, and be sure to keep them clean to improve visibility.
  • Use caution when snow banks limit your view of oncoming traffic.
  • Avoid using cruise control in snowy or icy conditions. In adverse conditions, you want as much control of your car as possible.

    See more safety tips.

What's in your winter survival kit?

If you drive in remote areas or are planning a long trip this winter, keep a winter survival kit in your car. While some of the items may be appropriate for your car all year long, these supplies can help you deal with winter weather.

New Jersey - One of the Top 20 Most Helpful State Insurance Websites

11/4/2016

Insurance is a complicated topic and with so many resources online, it’s often difficult for consumers to find key information such as insurer rate comparisons and complaint data.

Here's help: In their latest analysis, personal finance website NerdWallet looked at insurance departments across the country, evaluating their online offerings and how helpful their websites are to consumers in their communities.

According to the analysis, The State of New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance website was ranked in the “Top 20.” It provides auto premium comparisons and complaint information using recent 2015 data. The site also offers information on life, health and homeowners (including renters) insurance, as well as advice on consumer protection.

The department's consumer helpline answered an auto insurance question in just one minute. New Jersey also scored well for consumer education resources, too, though many of those resources were not state-specific.

Suburban recommends this website as a valuable resource to assist our New Jersey clients. And we’re proud of the “Top 20” ranking it received.

Please contact our office at any time if you have questions about insurance.
